ADD HUMECTANTS
Humectants are skincare ingredients that attract moisture from the air and bind it to the skin, helping to keep it hydrated. Common humectants include glycerin, hyaluronic acid, urea, and propylene glycol. They are often used in moisturizers, cleansers, and other skincare products to improve hydration and prevent dryness.
“Prolonged exposure to air conditioning can lead to dry, dull, dehydrated skin. To counteract this, I recommend using hydrating cleansers and moisturisers containing humectants such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid,” says Dr. Derrick Phillips, Consultant Dermatologist at Biolite.
Many Korean skincare products contain humectants as they are an essential component for maintaining hydration and achieving the famous “glass skin” effect. Some popular Korean skincare products containing humectants include:
- Hyaluronic Acid Serums: Hyaluronic acid is a potent humectant commonly found in Korean skincare products. Brands like COSRX, Hada Labo, and Missha offer hyaluronic acid serums that deeply hydrate the skin and plump up fine lines.
- Sheet Masks: Many Korean sheet masks are infused with humectants such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and aloe vera extract. Brands like Innisfree, Etude House, and Tony Moly offer a wide range of sheet masks formulated to provide intense hydration and improve skin elasticity.
- Essence and Ampoules: Korean essences and ampoules often contain humectants along with other beneficial ingredients. Products like the SK-II Facial Treatment Essence and the Missha Time Revolution Night Repair Ampoule are known for their hydrating properties.
- Moisturizers: Korean moisturizers are typically formulated with humectants to lock in moisture and keep the skin hydrated throughout the day. Brands like Laneige, Klairs, and Dr. Jart+ offer moisturizers that contain humectants like glycerin and hyaluronic acid.
- Toners: Korean toners, also known as “skin” or “hydration” toners, often contain humectants to prep the skin for better absorption of subsequent skincare products. Brands like Pyunkang Yul, Benton, and Klairs offer toners that provide lightweight hydration without leaving a sticky residue.
REGENERATE AND REPAIR AT NIGHT
“Incorporate products with ingredients like retinol or peptides to promote cell turnover and collagen production. Consider using nourishing serums or masks to replenish moisture and enhance skin elasticity while you sleep,” advises Dr. Ecaterina Lica, Specialist Dermatologist at AEON Clinic.
UNDO SUN-DAMAGE
“To prevent skin pigmentation and discolouration we advise to do a session of skin resurfacing every few months,” says Dr. Halah Taha, Aesthetician at Dubai clinic Ouronyx. “T Neogen technology, exclusively available at our clinic in the Middle East region, offers a promising solution for individuals seeking to improve their skin’s appearance, particularly in addressing issues caused by sun exposure.”
KNOW YOUR ACTIVES
“Middle Eastern skin can be prone to hyperpigmentation, which can be exacerbated by sun exposure and hormonal changes. Skincare products containing vitamin C, niacinamide, azelaic acid, kojic acid, liquorice extract and alpha arbutin can help fade dark spots and even out skin tone,” advises Dr. Phillips.
IT’S ALL ABOUT COLLAGEN
“Collagen is what helps our skin stay supple and youthful. As we age, collagen diminishes, which leads to signs of ageing, wrinkles and increasing laxity,” explains Dr. Sophie Shotter, Aesthetician at BioLite. “For in-clinic treatments, I would advise trying treatments such as Sofwave and Polynucleotides, which help collagen production. Alternatively, collagen supplements are fantastic too, as they deliver what is needed to the body via the body, rather than skin and support from the inside out.”
START YOUR DAY RIGHT
“Start your day with antioxidant-rich products to protect your skin from environmental damage and boost hydration. Finish with a high SPF sunscreen to shield against harmful UV rays and prevent premature ageing and sun damage,” Dr. Lica recommends.
SPF ALL DAY, EVERY DAY
“Wear high-factor sunscreen (SPF30+) every day even when inside,” urges Dr. Phillips. “Although the high melanin content in Middle Eastern skin provides some built-in protection, long-term exposure to UV rays from the sun can cause damage to the skin, accelerating the loss of collagen and resulting in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and sunspots. The majority of signs of skin ageing are caused by exposure to UVA, which passes through clouds and windows. Therefore, you should also wear sunscreen indoors, particularly if your home has lots of windows.”
PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR SKIN
“Pay attention to how your skin responds to different products and adjust your routine accordingly. If you notice any irritation or sensitivity, consult a dermatologist for guidance,” advises Dr. Lica.
